  • Symphony & Tea At Highlands

Tea & Symphony @ Highlands Jaya Teas is proud to announce our association with the beautifully organized, ever so well attended program "Tea & Symphony" at the Highlands mansion in Ft. Washington, PA.

The Highlands Mansion, located on a 44 acre plot of land just outside Philadelphia, was built by a wealthy merchant named Anthony Morris in 1796. Since then, the property has changed hands several times until it was turned over to the Common Wealth of Pennsylvania by the Roosevelt family. Today, the Mansion has been designated as a historic land mark and is preserved by the state of PA.

The Tea & Symphony program is a fund raiser for the restoration and upkeep of the Highlands Mansion. Students from the world renowned Curtis Institute perform chamber music in the beautiful mansion. At the January 16th program, Jaya Teas was proud to serve a blend of Goomtee (Darjeeling) and Boisahabi (Assam) teas, which was very much appreciated by those gathered to listen to the music.

If you are in the neighborhood, please plan on attending the next Tea and Symphony program which will be held on February 20, from 2-4 pm. Click here for more details.

    Health Benefits of Tea

Health benefits of tea are many and quite well known. Regular consumption of tea not only keeps you fresh, but also provides benefits not seen in soda pop and other common beverages.

  • Unlike the colas, tea does not contain phosphoric acid (common ingredient in cola beverages) which can lead to osteoporosis
  • The antioxidant properties of tea keeps your skin from being damaged by oxygen free radicals. The same antioxidant properties also prevent diseases such as cardivascular disease, and cancer.
  • Tea contains only a small amount of caffein enough to perk you up in the morning, but not enough to put you on the edge all day.
  • Tea does not cause dehydration, and in fact drinking four to six cups of tea will provide you enough water to keep you hydrated all day!
  • And, in recent animal model experiments tea has been shown to improve the endurance capacity
  • Thus, tea should be the obvious choice for all young adults and people living an active life style.

    Soureni Estate, 2nd Flush

Perched high up in the hills of Darjeeling is a small estate that once belonged to my mother-in-law's family. Located at 4200 to 4600 feet, Soureni Tea Estate once belonged to two brothers, Ramlal and Jalooram Tiwari who followed the trail blazed by many Marwaris* before them to the frigid mountains of West Bengal, to run tea estates.

The company came to be known for its high quality teas, which were often sold even before production started. The estate served as an inspiration to many of our family members, who have followed the family tradition into the tea business. As is the fate of many family businesses, the estate was sold off in late seventies, but under the new owners the tradition of quality product has not diminished. Soureni is still regarded as "the little estate that could"!

We are proud to bring you Soureni Estate second flush which is a fine fine tea, with the traditional muscatel aroma of the Darjeeling classics.

*Marwaris are a community of entrepreneurial people from the desert state of Rajasthan. Very early on the Marwari community recognized the value of trading in tea, and were instrumental in taking care of the industry as the British departed India"
