Gift ideas for the holiday season

Nothing says "I love and care for you" more than a gift that has a personal touch to it. Today I want to focus on how you can make your own inexpensive gift packs to hand out to your near and dear ones.

Lets start out with the most economical gift you could give this season: That would be simply a caddy of Jaya tea, with a nice little bow attached to it.

Good news about health

I hate being preachy about health, especially around the holidays. But being a doctor, a particular news item recently caught my eye and I just had to share it with you. Lung cancer, as you know, is one of the most insidious diseases that annually kills more people than breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon, gastric, and skin cancer ALL PUT TOGETHER! Well, there is some very good news this holiday season about lung cancer.

A new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine has found that regular CT scan (an X-ray like test) can help in early detection of lung cancer. And early detection couple with aggressive treatment can have a SIGNIFICANT impact on the life of the cancer patient. In this study they found that around 90% of those patients whose cancers were detected early went on to live past 10 years. Just to show you how dramatic this difference is, think about this - currently, 90% of the lung cancer treated patients don't live past 5 years! I say, Wow, what a difference a little test can make!

Now skeptics will say that the study needs to be confirmed, and it will probably be a while before the medical establishment accepts these results, but I for one am convinced that this study shows early detection and treatment MAY be helpful in impacting the prognosis of the disease. So - and I am saying this as your friend now, not as a doctor - if you know any of your friends or family members who are at the risk of lung cancer (such as, may be they were a smoker in their youthful years), you owe it to yourself to have them take this study to your family doctor and discuss it with them. This may be the best holiday gift we could give ourselves.
