First Flush Tea

Kurseong Subdivision
Highlands Tea Estate is part of the Longview Tea Gardens where my husband's uncle Mr. R. S. Tiwari, oversaw the development and welfare of the tea garden for many years before retiring recently. My husband Sunil tells me that he has many fond memories of travelling to Longview estate and spending summers with uncle's family. Located in the Kurseong subdivision of Darjeeling, Longview Highlands is adjacent to the famous Makaibari Tea Estate, and the reason why its called Longview Estate is because from the estate house one has an uninterrupted view of the valley. The towns of Kurseong, Kalimpong and Darjeeling are only a short drive away from the garden.
The tea is grown on terraced hills under the watch of mighty Kanchunjunga, picked by 1200 or so workers who are housed and provided for by the tea estate. Longview, under the direction of Mr. Tiwari, had adopted the model of a benevolent employer, with the garden developing and providing many of the services needed by the employees. Many of those services continue even today, and the children of the workers go to schools built by the garden, employees receive electricity and running water provided by the garden.
